Ultimate Guide to Swiss Public School

26 Cantons = 26 Different School Systems

Switzerland is renowned for mountains and chocolate, and also for its world-class public education system. Whether you are a local family or an international one moving here, understanding how schooling works in Switzerland is an important step in helping your child succeed.

Public vs. Private Options

The vast majority of Swiss children attend public schools (approximately 94%), which are free, high quality, and run at the cantonal (regional) level. Families also have the option of private and international schools, which may offer bilingual programs, specific curricula (IB, British, American, French, German, etc.), or boarding options.

Cantonal Differences

Education in Switzerland is not centralized — each canton decides its own structure, curriculum, and even holiday dates. While there is a general framework set by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK), parents should be aware that the details can vary significantly depending on where they live.

TIP: HERE is a link to the education website of each canton as the devil is in the details!

Key Stages of Swiss Schooling

Kindergarten / Early Years

  • Usually starts around age 4–6, lasting 1–2 years depending on canton.
  • Focus on social, emotional, and early learning skills rather than academics.

Primary School (Primarschule / école primaire)

  • Covers ages 6–12 (Grades 1–6).
  • Core subjects include German or French and Italian (depending on the canton), mathematics, local language, sciences, and arts.

Lower Secondary (Sekundarschule / école secondaire I)

  • Starts around age 12 and is the first major streaming point.
  • Students are placed into different ability levels or performance setting tracks, which may influence their pathway toward apprenticeships or university.

Upper Secondary (Sekundarstufe II/école secondaire II)

  • From about age 15–18.
  • Students choose between:
    • Apprenticeships (dual-track system): Combining part-time school with practical training at a company.
    • Gymnasium (academic track): Leading to the Swiss Matura, which gives access to universities.
    • Specialized schools: Focused on areas like business, health, or arts.

Higher Education

  • Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences are highly respected worldwide.
  • The ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne are consistently ranked among the top universities globally.
  • Here are some great websites covering Swiss Universities and higher education pathways.

What Makes Switzerland Unique

  • Multilingualism: Depending on where you live, the main language of instruction will be German, French, Italian, or Romansh.
  • Apprenticeship System: Around two-thirds of students pursue vocational training, a pathway highly respected in Switzerland.
  • Flexibility: Even after early streaming, students can change paths later with bridging programs or additional schooling.
  • No School Rankings: there really are no public school rankings here is Switzerland. Read more about that here.

Links & Statistics for Further Reading
