Understanding the Swiss Education System & Private Options

26 Cantons = 26 Variations

Relocating to Switzerland is an exciting opportunity, but navigating the education options can feel overwhelming. With 26 cantons, multiple national languages, public, private, international and boarding school options, finding the right school for your child is often one of the most important decisions a family will make.

One of the first things families discover is that there is no single Swiss school system! Education is managed at the cantonal level, meaning rules, language requirements, curriculum structures and admission processes vary between regions.

Depending on where you live, your child may enter a school where the primary language of instruction is:

  • German
  • French
  • Italian
  • Romansh

For many expat families, understanding these local differences is an important part of planning a successful move.

Read our complete guide to the Swiss Education System and our clear guide about choosing a school in Switzerland.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS

In Switzerland, about 85% of schools are public, serving about 94% of students. That means that the remaining 15% of schools are private offers.

Here are the reasons some families choose private schools:

  • Smaller class sizes
  • Bilingual education
  • Specialist programs
  • Alternative curricula
  • Different approach
  • To keep international schooling options open
  • Need for flexibility

Many private schools align with the Swiss curriculum and Swiss education values,  allowing for transfer into public schools at a later point. Keep in mind, some do not!

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • British Curriculum
  • American Curriculum
  • Bilingual programs

International schools are often preferred by families who:

  • Relocate frequently
  • Expect a future international move
